São Tomé e Príncipe is the perfect destination for travellers searching a truly unique experience. The two main islands of this country plus some smaller ones peek out of the Atlantic Ocean right next to the equator. Dense tropical forests, misty valleys, hidden mountains and ancient colonial cities take up the island's interior while the lower parts are blessed with outstandingly beautiful beaches. The only bigger city is Cidade de São Tomé with Hotel Agôsto Neto right in its heart. São Tomé City is one of the oldest colonial towns in Africa with an outstanding ancient centre. During the five centuries since first Portuguese settlers arrived, live had been marked by slave, cocoa and coffee trade with and a huge fort at the seaside avenue is still witnessing these times. Today the island is potentially one of the richest per capita in the world with crude oil grounds expected around it. But in fact it is still a very unique piece of laid back African lifestyle, glimpsing out of the dusty sea. Easy, easy or "leve-leve" as we would say. |
